Modified Backyard Volleyball Rules

Since we are not professional volleyball players we need to modify the official rules of volleyball to encourage good sportsmanship and friendly competition. Whenever in doubt, be a good sport and give the benefit of the doubt to the other team. After the game maybe they'll offer you a beer.

  1. Bring your laid-back and fun attitude. Relax, chill out, have fun.
  2. Competitiveness is fine, but BE A GOOD SPORT at all times.
  3. We use "Rally Scoring" i.e. a point is made on every play including side out.
  4. Play four games to 25 points. Winner of a game is the first team to 25 points and must win by 2 points.
  5. Team on the court is to consist of 6 players.
  6. The maximum number of males on the field is (4) and the minimum number of females is (2). A team can play with more than (2) females if they choose.
  7. If there are 3 hits on a side, a female must touch the ball at least once. 1 or 2 hits on a side do not require a female to the touch the ball in that case.
  8. No attacking or blocking the serve. In other words, if the first return hit is from the front row on a serve, the return must go up in an obvious way. There are no dink or spike returns of the serve allowed.
  9. Contact with the net by a player is a fault when it is made during the action of playing the ball, or it interferes with the play.
  10. On a serve if ball touches the net as it goes over it is still a live ball (playable). It is not permitted to penetrate into the opponents' space under the net if this interferes with the opponents' play.
  11. No spiking from the back row. If you are in the back row, you can't move to the front row to spike.
  12. No time-outs except for Beer or parenting issues.
  13. No mass substitutions. Players must rotate in one at a time.
  14. The Home team is to e-mail Mindy and Jason (holyknees@comcast.net) by 11:00pm on Wed night with the scores. Please CC your opponent as a cross-check.
  15. If a team must forfeit or is a no-show more than twice during the regular season, they will not be able to play in the tournament. If you don't have enough players for a particular game, try to get substitutes. If you still don't have enough, still show up to play and "borrow" players from the other team or play a "mix-it-up" game with the other team. **If you show up without enough players, you would still take an official loss as a team, but it wouldn't count as a forfeit.**
